What types of AS/RS are there?

AS/RS stands for Automated Storage and Retrieval System, which is a type of material handling system used in warehouses and distribution centers to automate the storage and retrieval of items. There are several types of AS/RS systems, including:

• Unit Load AS/RS: This type of system is designed to handle large and heavy loads, such as pallets or containers. It uses automated cranes or shuttles to transport the unit loads to and from the storage locations.
• Mini Load AS/RS: Mini Load AS/RS systems are designed to handle smaller loads, typically totes or cartons. They use automated cranes or shuttles to store and retrieve the items from a dense storage racking system.
• Vertical Lift Module (VLM): VLM systems consist of a series of vertically arranged trays or bins that are accessed by an automated lifting mechanism. The system retrieves and delivers the required tray or bin to an ergonomically accessible position, allowing operators to pick or place items.
• Carousel AS/RS: Carousel systems are circular or oval-shaped racks with shelves that rotate horizontally or vertically. They can be single or multiple-level configurations and are used to store and retrieve small items. The system brings the required shelf or bin to the operator for picking or replenishment.
• Autostore: Autostore is a grid-based AS/RS system that uses a dense array of bins stacked on top of each other. Small robots, equipped with lifting mechanisms, travel on top of the grid and access the bins from the top. They pick, place, and transport the bins to designated locations for order fulfillment.
• Shuttle-based AS/RS: Shuttle systems utilize small robotic shuttles that move horizontally along rails or guide tracks within a racking system. The shuttles can pick up and transport loads within the racks, enabling high-density storage and retrieval operations.

Each type of AS/RS system has its own advantages and is suitable for different applications based on factors such as load size, throughput requirements, storage density, and order profiles.
